It is unrealistic to believe that because you can cook sausage and chips, you could open a profitable restaurant and receive a michelin star!! The same applies to image consultancy as an area of expertise.
With any job or career it is not realistic to think that you can be seen as a style expert by your clients without any real training or years of experience under your belt.
My Style Companion get a lot of enquiries from women with an eye for style, but this is not what image consultancy is about. Yes, it helps, but you need far more expertise than this in order to become successful.
When you’re competing with experienced and reputable competitors in the form of other personal stylists and image consultants, if you have no experience, you NEED training as you can’t expect your customers to pay you for your ‘expertise’ when you know as much as every other woman who shops on the high-street and reads fashion magazines. What sets you apart from every other fashion conscious shopper out there?
As a style expert who myself, has got to where I am through attending image consultancy and personal styling and fashion training courses, in addition to my years of experience in fashion retail, I strongly recommend attending a training course in image consultancy.
Not only is it a thorough way to achieve great standards in your career but also the quickest as opposed to gaining expertise through experience alone. However many women who want to become an Image Consultant, are concerned about investing their money or time as they think they know enough about fashion to get them clients. In order to become an image consultant successfully a training course is definitely the way to go in my opinion as in short space of time, you learn from a master image consultant and also learn from their experience, giving you the benefits of not making the same mistakes that they did when they started out as an image consultant.
So, there are lots and lots of image consultancy training courses out there so how do you pick the best one for you? Some are residential courses, others are home courses or distance learning and some training may take place over the course of months!
Here are a list of questions you might want to ask to ensure you find the best image consultancy course for you: -
1) What should I expect to learn on your course?
2) How long is the course and where does it take place?
3) What is included in the price e.g. meals, materials?
4) Who actually delivers the image consultancy course? For example, some training companies use the name of a celebrity to promote their courses, but that celebrity doesn’t even make an appearance on the actual course.
5) Are there any discounts or payment plans on offer?
6) Can I just book with a deposit for now?
7) How many students are on each course?
8 Is there any support for me afterwards?
9) Will I get any form of certification?
10) What is the tutor’s experience in this area of expertise?
When choosing your image consultancy course you need to know what you want to get out of training with a company? For instance, do you literally just want to know how to style the female body OR do you want to know how to start up and develop a profitable business in this field?
Maybe you are confident in personal styling as you have experience in this area, but lack the confidence in terms of the services you will use as an independent personal stylist and shopper. Do you want to establish and maintain a relationship with the trainer and tutor on your course – will this be beneficial to your business; or do you just want to be given the materials and go it alone?
All of these questions are things to consider before committing to a image consultancy training course.
Good luck!
