Rainbow Brights
A bang of colour added is essential for your spring wardrobe in 2009. Choose from tangerines and lilacs a key theme on the Luella runway this year, fuscia pinks, apple greens, sunshine yellows. Cornflower blues and turquoises were popular at Aquascutum and bold oranges made a glowing impression at London Fashion Week
from designers such as Christopher Kane and Giles Deacon. So in the doom and gloom that has
dictated our 2009 up until now, make the future brighter by adding a pop of colour to your
wardrobe. Block your colours and if you dare, go for the clash! Beware of wearing bold colours were you want to detract attention from though.
Go Nude!
Soft neutrals and earth colours provided a welcome alternative to black this year at shows like Chloe,
Nina Ricci and Derek Lam. Layer different tones or mix neutrals or take inspiration from Richard
Nichol and add a pop of neon colour. Dark skin tones can carry lighter neutral tones, however paler skins should look to find a shade that contrasts with their skin tone. Etro, Stella McCartney and Derek Lam used neutrals in soft, feminine tailoring were as New York fashion week’s flavour of the month, Thakoon as well as Preen and Issa went for floaty, sheer fabrics.

Beautiful Bouquets
Giambattista Valli and Dolce & Gabanna indulged in floral fantasies of textured corsage style, three
dimensional floral decorations. Fabrics were in full bloom on shows such as Gucci, Oscar De La
Renta, MaxMara and Moschino. Toughen up florals with edgy platforms or chunky accessories to
avoid looking too chintzy! Throw a cool summer knit over the top and finish off with a belt to dress down floral prints for a casual day time look.
Lets Ruffle Some Feathers
Ruffles, frills, and bows have all featured heavily in the s/s09 collections, especially in nude shades and transparent and sheer fabrics seen at Bluemarine, Jasper Conran, Sonia Rykiel and John Galliano. Remember to avoid adding too much ruffle or frill on areas that you want to reduce, as they will just add volume! However if you’re looking to add some curves were few exist, this is the way to go! Ruffles and frills are great for women who want to show a softer more feminine side or to add or show off curves.
Feathers added sheer indulgence to the runways of spring 2009 with pieces covered entirely with soft feathers seen at Donna Karan, to delightful finishing touches at the hems of skirts at Sophia Kokosalaki . Easily update last year’s bag by adding feathers in the style of a bag charm or wear one of the many gorgeous feathered headbands available on the high street to instantly revive your look.
Fringe Benefits
Western and Gaucho trends inspired fringing which appeared everywhere from the cute tribal style fringing at Christian Dior to red Indian styles at Alessandro Dell’Acqua to the luxurious and intricate fringing of Alexander McQueen’s asymmetrical fringe dress. Alberta Ferretti showcased more extravagant flapper styles which gave a flirtacious edge.
Heavy Metal
Metallics are big again for spring / summer 2009 where we saw fabrics like lame and brocade throughout Dolce and Gabbanna, Derek Lam, Marc Jacobs, Chloe and Burberry. Rich coppers, golds and bronzes are the key colours and just what we need to add a bit of luxury, glamour and glitter to a dull economic 2009.For more fashion conscious shoppers, ipdate your look easily with some metallic leggings worn as an alternate to black, but only if you have the legs to pull it off! Invest in a pair of metallic coloured platforms or gladiators to instantly glam up any pair of old jeans at minimal cost!
Tribal & Safari
Lois Vuitton, Anna Sui and Missoni made tribal style statements with elaborate chunky neckwear
and bangles, trial prints and Massai inspired hair decorations in burnt desert colours mixed with black and
browns. The tribal influence also saw bold animal prints making a mighty comeback in particular leapord spots and ikat print with feathers and python added to give a luxe edge. Ralph Lauren displayed sophisticated soft safari looks in his s/s09 collection in rich desert colours such as khaki and sand, using metallic fabrics to add a touch of glamour.
Women wear the trousers in 2009
Trousers are huge in 2009, whether its playsuits, jumpsuits, harem style, pegs, cigarette, 7/8, drop-crotch, utility or trouser suits you can easily update your wardrobe with a pair – just take your pick! For tall girls, harem and drop crotch look incredible, but keep your waist cinched and your top half simple. Tailored looks work on any shape were a sharp crease down the front will lengthen and slim the leg and create a smart and chic look no matter what age. Cigarette and cropped style look great on petit ladies.
Key tip for 2009!
Don’t just buy garments because they are “fashionable”! They key thing you need to ask yourself first is “does it suit me?” however I see a lot of women lately wearing jumpsuits, playsuits and drop-crotch trousers that are completely wrong for their size or shape which is the worst style crime of all! Nothing worse than fashion wearing you – it should be the other way around!
