Eco Fashion: Green is the New Black!

So, imagine a world of wardrobes, filled to the brim with endless amounts of cheap fashion items. No sooner have they been purchased they are out of fashion, only to be left to gather dust at the back of a closet. It’s no wonder that women spend a fortune on clothes yet still are confused and frustrated by the fact that they have nothing to wear!

As Yves Saint Laurent famously said, “Fashion fades. Style is eternal”. So why are women choosing cheap fashion over timeless style? Women choose the route of the cheap high street stores because they don’t understand their own style. They follow fashion because it is a way of looking “stylish” in the moment.

Go Green. Get Long Lasting Style.

Buying new clothes should be looked at as an investment, not a fashion fix. Nicola Cupples teaches clients to shop smarter. To utilise their wardrobes, not throw clothes away. By simply organising and showing clients how to update their wardrobes, women can always look stylish and fashionable without spending endless amounts of money on cheap clothes.

Nicola says “I urge clients to add up the cost of all the impulse buys they have in their wardrobe that they have never even taken off the hanger. People are always surprised at the cost and amount of garments that they have worn once, or maybe even never! As a rule most people wear 20% of their clothes 80% of the time. What a waste! My philosophy is to shop greener by shopping smarter.”

By investing in an Image Consultant who can conduct a full wardrobe consultation, people can save hundreds, maybe even thousands in the long term and can ensure that their wardrobe begins to work hard for them. Style Companion™ teaches clients how to shop in order to update their wardrobe so that everything they purchase compliments their existing wardrobe. This reduces the amount of impulse buying and the amount of clothes being thrown away each year.

Renew don't Replace

The key to greener shopping is to renew your wardrobe rather than replacing it. To invest in quality clothes that suit your shape and lifestyle and then to look after them properly to ensure you always look groomed, stylish and up to date. Not only will you feel like you are doing that little bit more for the environment but also, you will start to see a bit more green in your purse!

When Buying New

Bear in mind when buying new clothes that there are lots of ethical options out there for us to invest in. Producing clothing can be harmful to the environment as pesticides are often used in the production of cotton (25% of pesticides from cotton production contribute to the total world pesticide use) and pesticides damage the environment and can be hazardous to the health of locals. Also clothing often needs to go through processes including bleaching and dyeing which uses vast amounts of water where the pesticides and fertilisers can then lead to water pollution. As clothing is made, the materials are often processed and transported which involves fossil fuels releasing carbon emissions into the environment.

You can opt for more ethical materials when buying new clothes and do your bit for our earth. Wool, Organic cotton, Hemp, Bamboo and Soy Silk are all friendlier materials and require much less processing so choosing such materials will reduce your carbon footprint.

Recycle your clothes

Only 14% of clothes are actually recycled – most are thrown away and end up in landfills. Decaying wool is especially harmful in landfills as it releases methane as it breaks down which will contribute negatively to climate change. Recycle your clothes as it not only helps the environment but also means you are doing something that will help your fellow man who is less fortunate than you.

Freecycle is the green lover’s answer to e-bay but it costs you nothing! That way you can get rid of any clutter and give it to people who want it without a guilty conscience.

Washing Instructions

Try to wash clothes at thirty degrees which uses less energy and lowers your carbon emissions. Not only that but do washing when you have a full load to go on and it’s a blowy day and hang your clothes outside! Not only will they smell fresher but it will also reduce energy required to do your washing. Look for washing machines which are eco-friendly by being energy efficient.

Save money and the planet by using ecoballs and soapnuts which are both eco-friendly and cheap as an alternative to traditional detergents.

Dry cleaning is toxic and can actually release harmful chemicals. Most clothes can be hand-washed in cool water with a delicate laundry wash or invest in a steamer which will keep them fresh longer. Other options such as wet-cleaning are available at ecodrycleaning.co.uk or ask your local dry cleaners to use the GreenEarth method which is more widely available and although it still uses chemicals they are less polluting.
